About Mal

Mal Muratori grew up in Albany where their fascination with the natural world stemmed from backyard tree climbing, forest fort building, and unsupervised snake wrangling. From a young age Mal utilized art as a mechanism for communication, portraying tales of imaginary worlds, emotions and inner reflections.

From 2014- 2017 attended Shaker High School’s advanced art program, while volunteering at Whispering Willow Wildcare working in wildlife rehabilitation simultaneously nurturing their passion for at and wildlife. The two naturally became intertwined and the theme of their work centered upon a theme of portraying the natural world through their eyes and communicating their fierce love for all wild things. From 2017- 2020 Mal attended college at Paul Smiths’ where they studied fisheries and wildlife science, and sought to utilize their art as a mechanism for conveying scientific truths.

Mal’s work includes wildlife portraiture completed in watercolors, acrylics, and oil paint focused on displaying the unique and playful personalities of their subjects. Mal also enjoys creating works of art from objects found in nature including bones and other parts of once living organisms. Straddling the line between beautiful and macabre, and blending the arts and sciences mal grants animals a second life by breathing beauty into their bones through growing crystals and plants, and through painting floral patterns on specimens.

Mals’ work has been featured at the Adirondack Visitors Interpretative Center, The Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, Olpalka Gallery, and North Winds Gallery.

Mal’s current work features colorful illustrations of New York native fish and herpetofauna to be featured in Trailside’s Amphibian, Fish, and Reptile museum.
